First Due Garage Fire: 9308 Annapolis Road
At 1301 hours Engine 482, Engine 282 and Truck 28 were alerted for smoke coming from the garage. Mark Brady, Prince Georges County PIO, was first to arrived and advised a working fire in a 1 ½ story detached garage. Engine Companies 28 and 48 made quick work of the fire, while Truck 28 and Tower 33 crews searched, opened up and ventilated, both horizontally and vertically. At the 15 minute mark, the bulk of the fire was knocked and searches were negative. Command held Engine 482, Truck 28 and Tower 33 to overhaul, while the remaining units picked up. SlideShow

Passing of William “Smitty” Smith
It is with the deepest regret, that the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department, Incorporated, announce the passing of William "Smitty" Smith. Father of Life Member William Smith, Jr.
"Smitty" as many people knew him by, was a dedicated life member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department and held many positions, both with Kentland and the Prince Georges County Fire and Rescue Association. Please keep William "Smitty" Smith and the Smith Family in your thoughts and prayers.

Severe Weather Brings House Fire: 6808 Randolph Street
June 10 - Around 1900 hours violent storms moved into the area, and the calls started pouring in. At 1921 hours, after clearing a box in Landover Hills, Engine 282, Truck 28 and Chief 28B were dispatched to 6808 Randolph Street for the house on fire. The first arriving Engine went on the scene with a 2 story single family dwelling with smoke showing. Engine 282 arriving as the 2nd due Engine, stretched a line, backing up the 1st due Engine Company. Truck 28 arrived moments later and took 1st Truck responsibilities, performing a primary search of the 1st and 2nd floor, opened up, ventilated and secured utilities, while the chauffeur got ladders, lights and a PPV fan in place. Units from 28, 33 and 9 made good work of the fire, which involved the entire 2nd floor. At the 15 minute duration all searches were negative and the fire was deemed under control. Companies 28 and 33 were held to overhaul while remaining units went available. Chief 28B (Vazquez) had the Randolph Street Command. Fireground audio coming soon.
While units were operating on this incident, another house assignment was dispatched a few blocks from this location. Units went on scene with an electrical box on fire attached to the house. First Due Townhouse Fire: 7050 Palamar Turn
June 5 – At 2115 hours Engine 484, Truck 28, Chiefs 28A, 28B, 48B were alerted to 7050 Palamar Turn for the house fire with people possibly trapped. Engine 484 laid in and stretched a line to a two story end of the row townhouse with fire showing. Truck 28 arriving moments later went to work throwing ladders/ lights, performing a primary search of the basement, 1st and 2nd floor, ventilating and opening up for the Engine Companies. Engine Companies from 48 and 18 made quick work of the kitchen and all searches proved negative, At the 15 minute duration Command held Engine 484 and Truck 28 to overhaul and wet down. Passing of Joyce Mayes
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Joyce Carol Umphlet Mayes. Joyce fought a brief battle with cancer and she is now at peace. Stan and Lucille Umphlet, Joyces parents were members of our department and Joyce joined the Auxiliary on September 12, 1966. She is a Life Member, Auxiliary Past President and served in several offices and on many committees. In January 2006, Joyce joined the WLHVFD Association and worked on the LOSAP, State Tax and Ambulance Billing Committees. We extend our deepest sympathies to Joyces family, husband Fred, daughter Vivian, grandchildren Erin and Andrew, sisters Jean, Joan and Janet and many other relatives. Once arrangements are finalized we will report them here.

May 24 - The Members and Officers would like to congratulate Steven Lescure of Station 28 and Heidi Etherton of Station 48 on the start of their new careers. Steven Lescure graduated the Anne Arundel Fire Academy and is assigned to Station 23 (Jones Station). Heidi Etherton graduated the Salisbury Fire Academy and is assigned to Station 1. Truck 28 and Chief Catch Work in Bowie: 2616 Felter Lane
May 18 - At 2353 hours Truck 28 and Chief 28 were alerted for the house fire at 2616 Felter Lane in Company 39’s first due. Units from Bowie went on the scene with a 1 story single family dwelling with fire showing from side Charlie. Truck 28 arrived as the 2nd Truck and went to work throwing ladders, conducting secondary searches (negative) and opened up for the Engine Companies. Crews operating inside encountered heavy fire and were able to knock down all visible fire within 15 minutes. Truck Company 28 continued to open up and wet down hot spots as other Companies stood by. West Lanham Hills Participate in 2009 Joint Services Open House
May 16 – Several Volunteer Members from Station 28 along with other volunteer companies throughout Prince Georges County participated in the 2009 Joint Services Open House at Andrews Air Force Base. This annual event offers the public a closer look at the advanced capabilities of the armed services. Rainy Day Brings Door Pop: Finns Lane and Riverdale Road
May 4 - At 1547 hours Engine 281 and Chief 28B were alerted for the 9I at the intersection of Finns Lane and Riverdale Road. Company 28 arrived to find a 2 car accident with one trapped. Engine Company 28 quickly stabilized the vehicle, pulled a protection handline, provided patient care, and removed the driver’s door. The patient was then packaged and handed over the EMS unit and transported to a local trauma center. Chief 28B (Vazquez) had the Riverdale Road Command.

 First Due House Fire: 9327 Washington Blvd
Apr 28 - At 1316 hours Engine 484, Engine 281, Chief 28, Chief 28A were alerted for the House Fire at 9327 Washington Blvd in Company 48’s first due. Engine 484 laid in a supply line and stretched an attack line into a 1 story with a basement single family dwelling with smoke showing. Engine 281 arrived moments later and completed the water supply and pulled a back up line. Both Engine Companies along with Squad 33 were able to quickly locate and confine the fire running in the basement walls. All searches proved negative and with only minor extensions, Command held Companies 28, 48 and 33 to overhaul. Chief 28A (Grant) had Safety. Chief 28 (Alter) had the Washington Blvd Command.

Cut Job: Annapolis Road and Finns Lane
Apr 18 - At 1139 hours Engine 281, Engine 282, Chief 28A and Chief 28B with 10 Volunteers, were alerted for the 9I at Annapolis Road and Finns Lane. Company 28 arrived to find a 2 car MVA with 1 person trapped. Chief 28A establish the Annapolis Road Command as the crew quickly stretched a handline, stabilized the vehicle and provided patient care. The set of Genesis Rescue tools were placed in service and crew’s made quick work of the passenger side of the vehicle. Apr 9 - The Officers and Members of West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Dept. would like to congratulate Captain Josh Sheintal and his wife Marcie Sheintal on welcoming their 3rd child into the world. Caleb Francis Sheintal was born on April 9, 2009 at 2020 hours at a healthy 8lbs 6ozs, 21¾ inches long. The Sheintal Family is doing well and we wish you the best in the years to come. Mazel Tov.

First Due Apartment Fire: 5446 85th Ave
April 8 - At 1841 hours Engine 281, Engine 482, Ambulance 487, Chiefs 28A and Chief 48B were alerted to 5446 85th Ave, for the apartment fire with one possibly trapped. Company 28 arrived to find a 3 story garden style apartment with smoke showing, and the 85th Ave Command was established. Engine 281 secured their own water supply, and stretched a 400’ attack line to the 2nd floor. Once entry was made, Company 28 found a kitchen fire, and got a quick knock on it, as Squad 33 preformed a primary search. Engine Company 48 secured their own water supply and stretched an attack line to the floor above, where they found fire running the pipe chases, and was able to prevent any further extension. At the 15 minutes mark the fire was deemed under control and all searches were negitive. Units from West Lanham Hills operated for 2 hours overhauling and wetting down. Chief 48B (Batt 2) had Div 3. Safety 810 (Miller) had Safety. Chief 28A (Grant) had the 85th Ave Command.

Largo House Fire with MAYDAY: 87 Harrington Road
Apr 8 - At 0221 hours units from the Largo/ Kettering area and neighboring Companies were alerted for the House Fire at 87 Harrington Road, in Company 46’s first due. First arriving units found a 2 story single family wood frame with fire showing from the carport with extension to the 1st and 2nd floors. As crews were making an aggressive attack, a MAYDAY was sounded for a downed firefighter. Crews quickly located the firefighter and were able to remove him though a window via ground ladders to awaiting EMS units. A Fire Task Force was requested by Command, bringing Truck 28, with 5 Volunteers. Once on the scene Truck Company 28 performed a secondary search and assisted with opening up Division 2. Truck Company 28 operated for 45 minutes before being released.
The downed firefighter from Company 46 was transported to MedStar with second degree burns and is listed in critical/stable condition. Door Pop: Annapolis Road and Riverdale Road
Apr 4 - At 0033 hours Engine 281, Chief 28A, and Chief 28B were alerted for to 9I with one trapped.
Enroute PCS advise that a New Carrolton City Police Officer was involved. Engine Company 28 arrived to find a 3 car accident with one trapped, and the Annapolis Road Command was established. Once the scene was assessed the Engine Company provided patient care, pulled a protection line, stabilized the vehicle, and popped the driver side door. Rescue Squad 33 arrived and assisted with extrication and patient care as additional EMS units were requested for the multiple patients. Chief 28B Vasquez had the Annapolis Road Command. Chief 28A had Operations.

First Due Apartment Fire: 7863 Riverdale Road
Apr 1 – At 0707 hours after the Engine Company 28 cleared a pedestrian struck on Ellin Road, the Box was dropped for 7863 Riverdale Road, for the Apartment Fire. Engine 281, Engine 482, Truck 28, and Chief 28A arrived to find a 4 story garden style apartment, with smoke showing. Engine Company 28 laid in a supply line, stretched a 250’ 1½” attack line, found a kitchen off and extinguished the same. Engine 482 assumed 3rd due and pulled a back up line. The Truck Company took care of primary searches, ladders, lights, ventilation, utilities, and opened up. Units on the floors above reported no extension, and searches were negative, Command scaled the assignment back to Engine 281, Engine 482, and Truck 28. Units went in service at 0927 hoursSlideShow

 Company 48 Runs Head-on Collision in Seabrook
March 28 - At 1556 hours Engine 482, Ambulance 489, and Chief 48A was dispatched for the 9I with one over turned at 94th Ave and Lanham Severn Road. Engine 482 and Chief 48A arrived on scene to find a 3 car accident, with one on its side, and the Lanham Severn Road Command was established. The Engine Company pulled a protection line, and assisted Ambulance 489 with evaluating patients. Additional BLS units were called to the scene to assist with the multiple patients. Company 48 returned to service at 1630. Chief 48A (Eubank) had the Lanham Severn Road Command.

2 Alarm Building Fire in Riverdale: 5401 Carter Lane
Mar 25 – Around 1100 hours Truck 28, Chief 28, and Chief 48A were alerted for the building fire at the area of Carter Lane and Kenilworth Ave. first arriving units went on scene with a 1 story commercial building with heavy smoke showing from the roof. Command assigned Truck 28 to the roof to assist Truck 22 with ventilation. Engine Companies pushed in and made an aggressive attack, but were ordered out due to heavy fire coming through the roof. Units on the scene then went into a defensive attack, using ladder pipes, deck guns, and multiple handlines to gain control of the fire. Truck 28 operated for 3 hours before clearing the scene. Mar 25 - Today the members of Company 48 were greeted by the Lanham Cub Scouts. The Pack was given a tour of the Engine, Ambulance, and Station. Members answered questions and went over fire prevention tips for them to practice at home or school. SlideShow
