Engine 482 and the Chief's run 8811 Hunting Ln on the 2nd Alarm Fire In Laurel
Oct 1st - On Saturday October 1, 2011 at 1612 hours Rescue Engine 49 was dispatched to 8811 Hunting Ln in Laurel for an investigation. They arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a 3 story garden style apartment building with a report of people trapped. Communications dispatched Box Alarm 49-03 which brought Engine 48, as forth due engine with 6 volunteers along with Chief 28, 48A and 48B.

Engine 48 laid out 700’ of 3” supply line to side Charlie. Per command the officer from Engine 48 split his crew into two teams. Team 1 deployed a 400’ 1 ½” attack line to the second floor by ground ladder. Team 2 assisted Tower 10 with opening up the roof. Crews made quick work of the fire on the second floor, assisted with ventilation, and conducting a primary search which was negative. Crews operated for approximately 2 hours before returning to service. Chief 48A had Division 3, Chief 48B had Division 2 and Chief 28 was assigned to Side Charlie. Chief 28B assisted with Safety.

West Lanham Welcomes Newest Family Member
West Lanham Hills VFD is proud to announce the newest member to our family, Brooke Morgan Albertson. Born Friday September 2, 2011 at 12:00p.m. Brooke weighted 7 Lbs. 11 oz. Brooke is the daughter of Volunteer Sergeant Tyler Albertson and Cadi Foster, both members of West Lanham. Both Brooke and Cadi are resting comfortably. Congratulations to both Tyler and Cadi.
Engine Company 28 Takes in First Due House Fire: 5630 Westgate Road
Jun 20th - At 0327 hours Engine 281 was alerted to 5630 Westgate Road for the house fire. Engine 281 laid in and reported a 2 story, split foyer (vacant) with fire showing from the rear and stretched the front bumper line. Engine 281 made quick work of a couple rooms and the attic area and all searches were negative. Engine 281 returned to service 2 hours later.

House Fire at 12620 Hillmeade Station Drive brings Engine 484, Truck 28, and Chief 48B to the scene
Jun 20th - At 1810 hours Truck 28, Engine 484 and Chief 48B (Grant) were alerted to 12620 Hillmeade Station Drive for the house fire. Engine Company 18 reported a 2 story wood frame dwelling with fire showing. Truck arrived as the 3rd Special service and took Rapid Intervention duties. Crew members placed ladders around the home and opened points of egress. Engine 484's crew stretched a 200 Ft attack line to the basement from side Charlie. Chief 48B has safety. WLHVFD units returned to service 2 hours later.

Chief 48B and Ambulance 487 run 31 house at 8706 Bovelder Drive
June 19 - Chief 48B and Ambulance 487 were dispatched to the Working fire dispatch at 8706 Bovelder Drive in Beltsville when units went on the scene with heavy fire showing. Chief 48B (Grant) had Safety and Ambulance 487 had the EMS Sector.

Truck 28 takes in a quick afternoon job in Landover: 1934 Village Green Drive
Jun 17th - At 1244 hours Truck 28 was alerted to 1934 Village Green Drive for the townhouse on fire. Engine Co. 33 reported a 2 story middle of the row townhouse with smoke showing. Truck 28 arrived moments later and conducted a search of the home, opened up, ventilated and controlled utilities. A fire was located on the 2nd floor and was quickly handled. Truck 28 returned to service 1 hour later.
Engine 281, Engine 484 and Truck 28 go to Bladensburg for 2 Alarm Apartment Fire: 5804 Annapolis Road
Jun - 10th At 2339 hours Engine 281, Truck 28, and Chief 48A were alerted to 5800 block of Annapolis Road for the apartment fire. Engine Co. 9 reported a working fire on the 10th floor of 5804 Annapolis Road. Engine 281 laid in and took the connection on side Charlie and placed a back-up line in service on the fire floor. Truck 28 positioned on side alpha and laddered the building, searched the fire floor, ventilated, and opened up. A 2 Alarm was transmitted, bringing Engine 484 and Chief 48B (Grant) to the fireground. Companies located a unit off and Engine Co. 9 made quick work of it. Engine 484 reported to the 10th floor for overhaul. Chief 48B (Grant) had division 9 safety sector while Chief 48A (Miller) worked at the Command Post.West Lanham Hills units cleared just after 2 hours.
First Due 2nd Alarm Apartment Fire w/ Rescues: 5328 85th Ave
Jun 7th - At 2033 hours Engine 282, Engine 484, Truck 28, Chief 28A, Chief 48A, and Chief 48B were alerted to the 5400 block of 85th Ave for the apartment on fire. Chief 28A reported a 4 story garden style apartment with fire showing from 3 floors and the cockloft. Engine 282 laid in and stretched 2 attack lines into the building. Truck 28 threw ladders to numerous occupants in distress and searched the fire floor. Engine 484 stretched a 200 ft line to exposure B and held fire from extending to the Bravo exposure. Chief 48A had interior and Chief 48B had water supply. Units from West Lanham Hills operated just over 6 hours before returning to service.

Sunday Morning Fire in Kentland for the Ladder Truck and Chief 48A: 2108 East Marshall Place
Jun 5th - At 1050 hours Truck 28 and Chief 48A were alerted to 2108 East Marshall Place for the house fire with people trapped. Engine Co. 33 reported smoke coming from a 1 story single family. Truck 28 conducted a search, laddered all sides of the home, removed bars from the windows and ran lights. A couple rooms were found and quickly extinguished and all searches were negative. Truck 28 and Chief 48A returned to service 1 hour later.

Company 28 gets a “Little” Visit
Jun 1st - Today the Butterfield Daycare located in Lanham, came into Company 28 to visit their neighborhood Firehouse. After a quick tour around the station, the kids got to see their favorite firetrucks up close. They ended their visit with a quick lunch before returning to service.

Company 28 attends the 2011 Joint Services Open House
May 21st – Engine 281 headed to Andrews Airforce Base to provide coverage for this year’s Airshow. Roughly 50,000 people were in attendance and watched as the military showed off its fleet of aircraft and ground attack vehicles. Company 28 maintained 2 additional crews throughout the day.

Truck 28 runs Early Morning Fire in Glenarden: 7934 Johnson Ave
May 16th - At 0549 hours Truck 28 was alerted to the area of Johnson Ave and Martin Luther King Highway for the building fire. Engine Company 33 arrived to the corrected location of 7934 Johnson Ave and reported a 1 story strip mall with smoke showing. Truck 28 arrived as the second truck and gained entry to the exposures and began a search, opened up and ventilated. Several set fires were located in the barber shop and were quickly handled. Chief 48A (Miller) had Safety.

Smoke Showing from a First Due Seafood Market: 8333 Annapolis Road
May 14th – At 0053 hours Engine 282, Engine 484, Mini-Pumper 28, Chief 28B and Chief 48A were alerted to the 8500 block of Annapolis Road for the building fire. Engine 282 reported the corrected address to be 8333 Annapolis Road and found smoke showing from a 1 story carry-out restaurant. After gaining entry, Engine Company 28 located a fire in the kitchen area and began knocking it down. Additional lines were brought in as the truck companies opened up and searched. Within 15 minutes the bulk of the fire was extinguished.

Company 28 Participates in the Carrolton Elementary Career Day
May 12th – Members from Company 28 spent the day with the students and teachers from the Carrolton Elementary School for their annual Career Day. Truck 28 and the Mini-Pumper were on display for the future firefighters as we went over fire safety tips and hose line evolutions. The United States Navy, PG Police Dept., New Carrolton Police Dept and Public Works were also in attendance. After lunch, we packed up and returned to the Firehouse.

Lunch Time Kitchen Fire in Landover gets Truck 28: 2906 Brightseat Road
May 11th – At 1225 hours Truck 28 was alerted to 2906 Brightseat Road for the apartment fire. Engine Company 33 reported a 3 story garden style apartment with smoke showing. Truck 28 placed ladders, searched the fire floor, opened up for the engine company and ventilated the building. A small kitchen fire was quickly handled and command held Engine Company 33 & Truck 28 for minor overhaul.

2nd Fire of the Day for the Truck Company: 3984 Warner Ave
May 2nd - At 2202 hours Truck 28 was alerted to 3984 Warner Ave for the apartment fire. Engine Company 30 reported a 3 story garden style apartment with smoke showing. Truck 28 was next arriving and began to ladder the building and its exposures, search for possible trapped occupants, and ventilated. Several set fires were located in a terrace level unit in the rear and were quickly extinguished. Truck 28 operated just under a hour before returning to service.

Chief 28, Chief 48A and the Ladder Truck take in a Bowie House Fire: 3603 Mabank Lane
May 2nd – At 0218 hours Truck 28 was alerted to 3603 Mabank Lane for the house fire. Engine Company 39 reported a 2 story single family dwelling with fire showing. Dispatched as the 2nd due special service, Truck 28 arrived 1st and was granted those responsibilities by the Incident Commander. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions on the 1st and 2nd floors of the home and was able to bring it under control within 20 minutes. Truck 28 operated for over 3 hours before returning to service.
Several Firefighters received minor injuries while operating at this fire and have since recovered.

Truck 28 runs Easter Day Fire in Largo: 1703 Albert Drive
Apr 24th – At 1440 hours units from Largo, Bowie, Glendale and other nearby stations were alerted to 1703 Albert Drive for the house fire. First arriving units reported fire showing from a 2 story single family dwelling with extension to the exposure. This prompted command to call for additional resources, bringing Truck 28 to the fireground. Once there, Truck 28 completed a secondary search and checked for extension in the similar detached exposure. Truck 28 returned to service 30 minutes later.

Best Wishes On A Speedy Recovery To DCFD Firemen Injured In NE House Fire
The officers and members of the West Lanham Hills Volunteer Fire Department extend our thoughts and prayers to our brother firemen from DCFD Rescue Squad 3 and Truck 13 who were injured while operating at a house fire in the 800 Block of 48th Place NE early this morning. Not long after crews began interior operations part of the roof collapsed, trapping several firemen under burning debris. We ask that you continue to keep the DCFD firemen in your thoughts and prayers as they begin their journey towards recovery.
